  1. questionWhen I am finishing a braid near the end of the natural hair, the hair always sticks out of the braid. How do I solve this problem?
Most of the time this happens because either the client’s hair is cut very evenly, or the hair is bone-straight. What you can do is have the client wash and condition her hair prior to braiding. Be sure to advise them not to blow the hair dry. Doing so will straighten the hair - and you do ...
  2. questionWhen doing Kinky Twists, would gel be good to use with the Lusters Pink Moisturizer, to hold the strands that stick out?
Jam would be a great gel to use.
  3. questionWhen doing Kinky Twists, should I dip the hair two to three times after I rod the hair - or before I rod the hair?
If you dip the hair before you place the rods on the hair, it will be become straight and will not curl. Dipping them after will ensure that the hair will curl and hold.
  4. questionWhen doing Kinky Twists, how do you get them to curl?
What you want to do is use rods. The blue perm rods (found at Sally’s) are the best size to use because they’re not too small or too big. Roll the ends about 2 or 3 times with the rods and dip them in hot water. Once you towel-dry them, you can remove the rods and the ends should be ...

Marquetta recommends regular synthetic hair for Pixie Braids.
  6. questionWhat kind of moisture product do you use on the client's hair after you do Kinky Twists and Micro Braids?
If I'm just adding shine, I use regular oil sheen. But if I'm using it while braiding, I like to use Luster's Pink Oil Moisturizer.
  7. questionShould I wash my hair while I still have braids?
You should still be washing and conditioning your hair while its braided. It's also very important to maintain your hair while its braided. I would suggest using a clarifying shampoo this will rid the hair of all unnecessary dirts and oils.

Your best bet is to try using synthetic hair.
  9. questionIs there a certain type of hair I should purchase for Tree Braids?

  10. questionI want to learn how to Yarn Braid. Is this the same yarn you can buy in the arts and crafts stores? Also, can you burn the ends?
Yes! I do my yarn braids with regular yarn from the craft store. And yes, the ends burn just like synthetic hair.
  11. questionI understand how to do Kinky Twists, but I am having trouble with the knot at the beginning of the twist. Do you have any tips on how I can get the knot closer to the scalp?
Try starting the twist off like a cornrow. Cornrow down once, but no more than twice. This will ensure that the knot is close to the scalp.
  12. questionI purchased your video, and I can't seem to keep the ends twisted on my Kinky Twists. How do you get the hair to stay twisted? I will twist about halfway down, and then they start to unravel. Help!
Be sure you're twisting the hair individually prior to twisting them across each other. You're going to need to do this all the way to the ends. Not doing this causes them to unravel. If you're still having this problem and you are twisting properly then just use a clip on the ends until you're ...
  13. questionI ordered your Micro Braids DVD and noticed you didn't show how to do the slip knot technique. Why didn't you show this - and will it make your braids last longer?
The reason why I didn’t demonstrate the slip knot technique in the video was because at that time, the knotting technique was not too popular and my clients were damaging their hair during the removal process. In my opinion, it does not make a difference in how long your braids last, but i ...
  14. questionI have really short hair that's about an inch long. Do I have to wait until I can cornrow it?
The length of your hair for braiding is going to depend on the braider. Most braiders will say hair must be at least 2 inches long to avoid extreme discomfort.

Starting with 3 strands of "bulk" hair is the method Marquetta teaches in her videos.
  16. questionI am trying to do my own Micro Braids. Do you have any tips on finger positions that would be different from doing another person's braids?
Braiding your own hair can be challenging, but it’s possible. The best advice I can give is to try to do what’s comfortable for you. My finger and hand positioning does not change that much when I’m braiding my own hair. Sometimes I may have to turn my head a certain way in ord ...
  17. questionHow should I price my braiding services?
You could base your prices on an hourly rate. You have to remember that your time is very valuable - and that is basically what you're charging for. 18. questionHow do you seal the ends of microbraids when your using human hair?
Some use nail glue or spritz to deal the ends of the Micros. We don't suggest using the nail glue unless you're an experienced braider, but the spritz works fine.
  19. questionHow do you do the slip-knot technique for Micro Braids?
The slip-knot technique is done by taking a small piece of the extension hair and wrapping it around the two fingers holding the hair together. Once you’ve wrapped the thin piece of hair, loop it up and pull to tighten. Tie it in a double knot - and there you go!
