Will You Rock Your Grey Hair?

Last week I literally had a melt down about my hair.

Long story short… I rocked my natural hair for 1 month, had two bad hair days and was ready to throw in the towel!

No.. I wasn’t going to relax but I was ready to run back to my security blanket – my sew-in.

After my 8 year old daughter put me in my place about embracing my natural hair I decided to stay strong until Monday. 8-)

After being in the gym as much as I am now it’s much easier to rock my sew in. But, the difference between now and last week is that now I’m not giving up. It’s pure convenience with me being so busy.

My appointment was this morning and right now I’m sitting under the dryer reading my magazine and feeling like I’m in an oven!

Anyways, About 5 minutes ago I looked up and saw the most beautiful head of full grey hair I’ve ever seen.

It was an older lady who had more style in her finger than most 20 year olds!

Her hair was cut short and to say she rocked that style would be an understatement.

That made me think… When I start to grey will I embrace it or color it?

What would or do you do?

She inspired me to embrace it when it comes and rock it confidently… of course I say that now… :-)

Share your thoughts. I’d love to hear what you have to say!

I rock my grey…. If I feel like some color, I just wear one of my girls (wigs).

I’m 48 and the grandmother of a 11yo and a 9yo… I’m not ashamed to say that I color my hair. It’s not that I’m ashamed of my age, or my gray hair… I’m a proud grandmother, I’m just not ready to look like one! :)

I’m 44 and I am graying down the center. I’ll rock it for a while, but sometimes I will use a semi permanent color in it to change it up. I think once it starts to gray all over I will cut it short and rock my gray!!!

I am almost 40 and right now I’m just a wife & mommy. My husband looks like he’s 25 so I’m not ready to rock my gray yet. I’m impressed by those that do, but it’s not for me yet.

Hi Marquetta, I am going on 49 this year and I do have grey hair issue. I am and mother, wife and grandmother and don’t want the grey look just yet. I look like I am 40 on a good day. My problem now is that the rinse I have been putting on my head is giving me headaches, scap itchs all the time and it feels like bugs crawling on my head. Once I turn 50 next year I will rock my grey.

I will be 44 in Dec and I have had some grey since I about age 31 actually it was a few strands but now I have noticeably more which you can see when I part my hair certain ways. I have been natural this time since 2003, first time 1991 for a year, second time 1998 to 2001. I don’t use color, heat, or anything that could damage my hair but sometimes I wear wigs to change my style or for a glamourous look other than that I have total virgin hair. I love my hair, texture and length. I have pass shoulder length hair. Its great because when I wore relaxers in my hair it would only grow to my neck/collar bone. For me grey hair is normal, I am completely comfortable wearing it . I am free.

Greetings All ~ In May 2006, I choose the big chop, and started from scratch with natural hair. Overall the last five years, I experiments with everything but chemical straighters. In March 2012, I choose to join the Sisterlocks family. I’m 49 years old, and I prefer to color my hair. I am glad that we live in a country where we have choices.

    Hi Marquetta:
Grey has it’s advantages. I’m 54 years old, mother of two sons, grandmother of seven and have been rocking my for quite some time. I started turning gray at 16 yrs old. It’s a family crowning glory from my fathers side. My aunts grayed early some where in their 40′s. I met my aunt and biological father when I was 19 and the rocked that snow white halo and I can’t wait to go all white. I’m a salt & pepper with a touch more salt.
I refuse to color and I get more compliments from both men and women (young & old) on my hair, no matter what style I wear (braids, twists or flat ironed and curl). Every time a see a sista with the salt & pepper or just salt,, I make a point to stop and compliment them on their hair color choice and style. The amazement comes when they asks how do I keep the gray so bright and my hair so healthy looking, I hand them one of my business cards that indicates that I’m a natural hair stylist and explain that I make and sell all natural that not only promotes growth but nourishes the hair and use shampoo products & heat protectors designed for grey hair..
Many of my clients are now embracing their gray in braids, weaves (Biva #51 & #44), locs or just the natural hair care. If I can just convence my son that Grey is ok they will be find. My oldest is 34 and shaves his head to hide the grey he was born with and spreading. My 27 year old now keeps his cut close as his is increasing. He is thinking about coloring it since he just became a father and don’t want to be mistake for the his sons grandfather!!!
I’m a jazzy 54 with SALT & PEPPER and proud of it.

    Hi Marquetta!

I am only 29 and I am already rocking it! LOL! Women in my family gray early but age (physically) late. I am not sure if I will color it. We will see. :-)

  • Tommie

I am now about 85% gray and I am surely rocking mine’s. I thought about color but decided not too because it take more work to color than to just wear it naturally and I even stop putting relaxers in my hair to see have my gray would look just pressed out.

  • Tracey

Hey Marquetta, it’s Tracey (the teacher) from your March training. I am fully natural, but not ready to be that natural, lol. I am 43 and I don’t have alot of grey but the little that I have comes front and center of my head. I don’t use permanent dyes anymore (stopped a long time ago), and a rinse only last a few weeks, so I turned to henna. It colors my greys a nice auburn color, and looks like light highlights. Love it!!!

  • Queen

I have grey hair and I color it. Grey hair is beautiful if you can afford to spend money at the beauty shop twice a week, If not you look haggard and worn. I color mine and wear it interlocked. People think I’m in my forties I take care of myself into today economy I’d rather spend my money on conditioners. My hair is interlocked, it’s longer than it has even been and healthy. I don’t want short hair. I had that all my life and wished for healthy long hair. I’ve been waiting on you to come out with a interlocking video. I’m not a beautician I had to learn to do my own none of the shops in my city know how to interlock hair.

  • cherry

I will continue to color my hair. Some people it looks good on. Me not.

  • http://www.marquettabreslin.com Marquetta Breslin

Good for you!! I’m going to get 2 more sew-ins for sure. Then in going to rock my natural until my 3 year mark. I’m very excited.

  • http://www.marquettabreslin.com Marquetta Breslin

Thanks and good luck! Last week I lifted my natural with a 8/73 from Wella and immediately hated I did for the purpose of root touch ups. :-)

  • Cinda

Love, love, love being natural & grey! I do so wish there were pics available w/some rockin’ cuts for short grey & natural. Can’t wait to go totally white.

  • janet

i colour my hair on special occassions, but most of the time i just leave it. It is a vicious circle, dyeing your hair is very high maintenance and can cause irritation and breakage around the hairline. i wish there was a magic solution! but until they find one i will have to stay as natural as possible. x

  • Doshie

Hey, I’m in my early 30′s and after wearing braids and sew-ins for about 6 months to let my hair grow out, the outcome was crazy when I seen my gray hair. IT WAS EVERYWHERE. I didnt feel I had a choice but to pur rinse in it, especially since my gray looked like small whisps of lint. Once I have more gray I think that I will let go all the way

  • http://www.facebook.com/lashton Leah Ashton

when i do go gray i know it will probably start at the front like my mom. then again my other grandma is 75 and she doesnt have a grey hair at alll

I got my first gray hair when I was 8 or 9, and I was very proud of that silver strand. I am now about 10% gray and I am not quite 40 yet, but I don’t want to color my hair. I’ve always admired gray hair – especially the salt-and-pepper kind – so I plan to let nature take its course. I also don’t trust dyes. I’ve considered a rinse, but that would be as far as I would go, if at all.

  • betty

I love to see a woman with grey hair ,specially a dark skin blk woman ,even if her hair is white
it’s so pretty ,i have some grey and i’m proud because it showed that i have lived longer then some my age and glad i made it and still here to say so ,So be proud

  • Pookie

Embrace it dear. Trust me when you start to get it’s gonna be shocking. It’s does some tricky things when you put rinses or dyes on. I’m 43 and about 30% gray it’s a love hate deal sometimes. As it is with being natural. But for the most part it’s a beautiful experience :) .

  • K

Rock it. Definitely if I can rock one streak of grey. However, if the whole head is, that’s fine, too! Just not too soon:)

  • SassyC

Girl, I’ll just be honest. I started graying around the edges of my hair around 35yrs old. I’m 42 yrs old now. I thought I would embrace my grays and rock them. But, I quickly changed my mind when I saw how the gray didn’t really look good with the rest of my natural auburn/red hair. So, I colored it. If I was totally gray I think I could rock the whole gray look. Because I think there is a real beauty in a full head of gray hair. But, it’s that transitional stage that’s hard.

  • Ms. Gayle

My hair has been blond, red, burgandy and even olive green (by accident). When I decided to wear my natural color it was then that I discovered my beautiful gray hair. It is a silver gray, not the yellowish color that I have seen on some. I love it. I come from good genes and don’t have a lot of gray (mainly in the front), but few strands I do have look soo good. No more color for this lady.

  • Lorraine Brown

I gray in the front of my head and have been coloring it for the last 3 months it does no good to color it as I go natural now I’ve decided to leave the gray to see the full affect even tho it’s not becoming to me .For those who gray so elegantly embrace, enjoy, and certainly rock it.
