Here’s How To Choose The Right Braiding Hair

In the past 6 years, I think the most asked question I get is, “Marquetta, girl what kind of hair do you use for your braids?” In this video, I explain different types of wet-n-wavy braiding hair available and the ones I choose to wear for braids and why.

I want to hear your thoughts! Make sure you leave a comment.

Great point! There are many different ways to braid in hair. It doesn’t have to be folded at all, some fold it in the middle, and some fold it only a few inches down. I'm familiar with those techniques and know how to use them.

In my experience with Remy hair my hair was braided by someone in a braid salon and she was not familiar with the technique I was trying to explain to her so, at the time (years ago) I agreed to let her go ahead braid my hair using the traditional technique (folding in half) not realizing I'd have a mess on my hands….LOL!

  • Marquetta Breslin

I'm sorry you've had such a horrible experience with Braids! Just like braiding hair there are so many different choices for weaving hair. If you're looking for something that lasts for a long time I'd definately go with Remy hair. If you want decent quality I'd go with Outre.

  • Marquetta Breslin

If I dont order my hair, I usually go with Milky Way straight hair.

  • Marquetta Breslin

The “cheaper” brand was a human hair blend. The rest was 100% human hair.

  • Marquetta Breslin

It all depends on the type of hair you're wearing. I have to wash my hair at least once per week.

There are some shampoo's for weaves that work well by extending the life of the actual hair.

  • nawandapinkney

HI MARQUETTA, YOUR VIDEO AS ALL ALWAYS WAS VERY INFORMATIVE. I NEVER REALLY PAID ANY ATTENTION TO THE HAIR I BUY BECAUSE I WAS ALWAYS IN A RUSH BUT NOW I WILL MOST DEFINITELY TAKE MY TIME TO SEE WHATS THE BEST.I ALSO NOTICE THAT THE HAIR WAS HARD SOMETIMES AND JUST THOUGHT THAT IT WAS SUPPOSE IT BE THAT WAY. BUT I WOULD NOW BUY HAIR ONLINE BECAUSE I BEEN CHOOSING THE CHEAPEST AND I WASN'T PAYING ATTENTION UNTIL I GET HOME OR AT THE SALON. BUT THANKS TO YOU I KNOW NOW. THANK YOU, NAWANDA.

  • magicstylesalon

Oh, that must have been quite awful for you. I did not find a salon in the
US so far who did know any other technique than folding it down the midde.
We are located in Europe and the cheap hair is totally rejected here,
because Caucasians want to wash and style every day. Plus they want much
longer hair, because their own hair is usually below the shoulder. The
expectations are quite different in some ways.
I like the quality of your videos, you sure are a pioneer in that area.

I just wanted to make a comment on the hair I would use, I am a stylist who wears alot of braids and I have tried alot of different types of hair but I have found the the hair I used to love (Beverly Johnson) is nothing like is used to be, so I have been getting the more expensive hair. I agree with you that the cheaper hair feels better than the more expensive but when you are keeping the braids of for atleast 2 months it just does not stay that way for the duration of the style. I will be ordering some hair from his & her.com.

  • Cathy

Hi! I think your blog is great. I think I would use the cheaper hair. I am still new to this and trying to learn to braid. I want to experiment without it being to much of an investment. Thank you for the info. .

  • mahogany Williams

Hi my mane is mahogany and i must say my hair is so terrible i just want cut it all of i get so fed up with it I see people with extensions all the time and it look so good I want to cry sometimes just to see i spend so much money and it only lasted for a week can you please help I need help or maybe i'm buying the wrong braids please tell me the right kind of braids to buy i will appreciated it very much and when i do put in extensions again i will send you a picture. Thank you

  • sonia

Don't feel so bad. I have the same problem. I when to get a nive hair style and show the lady the picture of what I wanted and I don't know what the hell she did but it was not what I wanted. I ate going to weaver or braid shop cause their never give you what you want.

  • http://www.youravon.com/kneal6161 Karen

I would buy from his and hers, how many packets of hair do you recommend for mico braiding?

  • tatiana

    Hello how are you?
Thanks for that informative video. I would choose his and hers hair because of the constant wetting and washing and as you mentioned the sillcone will stay in tact longer. If I was in a rush I wouls choose the one that would curl better. But what do you do when you only braid the edges and weave the rest of your hair. How do you choose the hair. How dark is your natural black remy hair? Patiently waiting your response.
    Thanks

  • CLARA ANN MCGHEE-OLSSON

WELL BY ME START OF ON THE HAIR BRAIDING BUSNESS I WOULD HAVE TO GO BY THE LOWER COST BUT I WOULD RATHER GO FOR THE BETTER BRAND

  • natoria

Hey Marquetta thanks for the info on chosing the right braiding hair, chosing the right hair for my natural hair hair is a challenge because even though it was braided properly after a wash it just doesn't seem to look right.

  • deebrown

Thank you for the info I really needed it. I have wasted plenty of money getting the wrong type of hair. The type of hair that I would pick would very much depend on the amount of money I 'm working with when dealing with the client. If money is no issue it definently would be the His & Her brand, but if the clients budget is tighter it would be the Black Tide brand. I appreciate this and all of your training videos.

  • judy boyd

I like the expences kind its a lots better ,it has a better wave pattern, like you say it's a better texter it doesnt have a tight wave look, it's more looser, I think you will manage it a lots better to. its looks like it want tangle up on you.when you are washing it. I think I will be getting something like that to.I like that kind hair.

  • melissa

I prefer to spend my money on the braiding verses the quality of hair. And i found out the same education on the lengths and quality just as well. I found that that working with the inexpensive hair is really worth my while.

  • RaShonda

First of all I would like to say thank you for all that you do for our industry, you have served as a major inspiration in my life, so I thank you for that. I would have to agree with you on the Beverly Johnson hair. I have used it in the past for sew-in weaves and the quality has gone down. I can tell when my clients come back for maintainance and I shampoo the hair it gets very matted and hard to detangle and it was never been that way before. Out of the hair that you have shown in this video I would have to choose the human hair from his and hers. I have very long hair (almost to the middle of my back) and I would have to have the longer hair and also I work out so I would need good hair that would be able to stand to get shampooed often, so paying the extra money would be worth it to me if I can leave the hair in longer. No one wants to spend money and then have to take braids down after a couple of weeks because of the quality of the hair that would be a total waste of money and I have been in that situation before.

  • sophia

I would pick the hair from His& Her because I wash my hair once A week. I'm very please with your video. I just learn alot of info on braid hair.

  • sherry

Do you use two bulks when you order from Hiis& her.

  • Name

His and Hers Hair Goods does have a better quality and selection of hair, and like the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Most people would love the luxury of purchasing hair that is of high quality, but when your funds doesn't allow that then you do what you need to do.

Your demonstration was good, but it also showed that the more cheaper package of hair had the least amount of hair in it by about half, so therefore; it would have cost just as much as the Janet (Encore) if it had as much in it.

I don't wear braids anymore and I let my clients choose what they want because most people think you're trying to make a buck off of them when you give them suggestions. But I agree, it is better to spend top dollar on a great quality hair and have it last than constantly buying a cheaper quality.

    Toni

  • andrea

i would perfer to pick out the best hair and sometime the cheapest hair is better then the expensive hair but i would perfer quality cause i would want the best in my hair. so i shouldnt be cheap.

yes marquetta i ashamed of wearing my own hair, for one thing it's more controlable than with my than with my own hair. but what i wanna know is which hair you favor the most milky way or outre for sew in?

  • Yolanda

I would use the Black Tide because it fits my budget and I dont wash my hair that much when it is braided. Thanks for the video, I love the information. It was very helpful.

  • Bobbie

Hi Marquetta, I've watched your videos about hair for a while now and I'm constantly amazed at your advice and information about hair care. I was so unsure about ordering your tapes until today. Watching this video about buying and picking the right hair for braids had always been and experiment for me. I've always known what I wanted but unclear about the type of hair to buy to get that look. I have spent a lot of money on braids in the past. Each time my hair was braided my look was short lived, due to stiff, tangled or shedding hair brands. I really enjoy your knowledge, help and concern in teaching about hair care. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH. I wish you continual success. Bobbie
P.S I will be purchasing those hair tapes soon. Thanks again

  • gayle johnson

i would get the his and her hair for the longevity of the product! if on tight budget then i would get the cheaper one esp if doing a childs head

I never use human hair, I only use kanekolan or synthetic hair. They are easier to maintain and last longer

  • kaddyme

hi how are you.thank you for all the information you have share with us about using the best braid to buy ,and use for our hair.keep up the great work you are doing.love ya

    Hi Marquetta,
I want to get my hair braided. I would like to wear my hair straight some days and wavy on other days. Should I find some kind of hair that I can cut off of the track to achive that look or what kind of hair would you reccommend?

  • meka

Thanks for the video. I believe I would like to purchase the hair from his and hers also depending on my funds at that time.

  • johnkinsela

It was very informative. As for the quality of Beverly Johnson products, the last lot of hair I got of hers was synthetic latch-hook hair and found it was made in Indonesia. The synthetic hair was the best quality I have ever come across so far, but human hair from Indonesia is less likely to be of good quality as the sources of hair is limited compared to China, Hong Kong or Korea.

  • sylvia

thank you for that what going on i lost my job, so i been braiding family hair and they keep bringing braid hair with the curl on the end. I guess because its cheaper,i hate using that hair because it tangles to much i have to use detangling spray and a wide tooth comb. i like using yaky straight hair only if im braiding to the end

  • Joy

Good information. That has also been a thriving question for me also (Obtaining quality braid hair).

Marquetta, I found some bulk hair in ,y stash of hair, (it was intended to be used for a fusion job) in a hurry to take my own hair, I forgot this was cuticle hair! I took to my braider!
I was in Brooklyn New York, at a braiding salon, fell asleep, in the chair!
The braider did a beautiful job as always, but you could see in her face, when she said, I do not know if you are going to like that hair!
It took a total of half an hour between the time I left the shop and hit the drizzling air in NY that weekend, that by the time I arrived at my resting destination, my hair was so tangled, behind my back that I literally cried for this was my own doing! not the braider!
Marqueta, I had just seen your video about the week before and completely forgot about this!
Well, now I have to wait one more month before I can take this down, because I paid for the workmanship of it and I have to grin and bare this until at least the middle of November!
    You know, this is true……….

  • daliesha19

    hi marquetta
i am a hair stylist i have been braiding hair since i was twelve. i always would go with the type of hair for braids that has the best texture. i braid my own hair and once i bought some hair that was 7.99 it was “human hair quality”. It braided well and everybody thought i had paid 40.00 for itand i found that it was very thick and it was more hair in the bag. I remember when i got a job. So i could afford the more expensive hair. Then Milky Way was 26.00 for a 14 inch and that hair tangled up on me and i had to take my hair down a month later. I worked at this hair store for 2 years and a 14 inch costs 34.99 fo colors 1-4 and as you have shown the higher “quality” is thin. A lady bought some wet and wavy Milky Way and the hair bled. The store owner insisted that it was the cheaper brand and i knew that it wasnt because i had sold the lady the hair and i have braide with the cheaper brand and the lady never complained. I notice they have Remy micro hair for 89.00 and they always recommend that as being high quality and the best for braiding and weaving. I recnetly braided my hair with some hair that costs 14.99 for a 14″.I was wondering what can i use so it wont look dry and dull because the #4 is fine its the mixed color that i have that looks dull. And do you use MIlky way hair. And if so what is you opinion of it

Hey Marquetta!!! I just wanted to comment on your video and girl I agree with you all the way, but for some reason I kept looking at your shirt….lol I want one…lol

  • http://myinstantsuccess.com/ LaVerne

Enjoyed the info on the different types of hair especially since I'm getting ready to get my hair braided. However, when you display an item (dark colored), put it on a light background. The dark hair placed on a dark table was hard to see any comparison. Items displayed on an opposite colored background shows up better.

  • WW

Marquetta thanks for the info. I've purchase hair for weaving and it was fabulous. The hair last for many, many months and the texture never changed. I recommend their hair to every woman looking for good quality hair. I'm thinking about getting braids and will take your advice on not using hair with cutical for braiding.
If you've purchased from this site before, what hair do you think is best for braiding? I truly value your opinion.
    Thanks

  • Mel

THANK YOU SOO MUCH FOR DOING THIS VIDEO!! I love wet n wavy look in braids, my husband does too, but I've never been able to find a nice quality to use that would'nt matte up. As you said in your video about the indian remy human hair with the curticle ooh wey, I used that hair for braids once and it was a HOT MESS!! I can't thank you enough for clarifying. Keep up the good work and the very informative videos!

  • aliceseymour

Thanks for the tips on your human hair selection. I am a beginner braider for my daughter because she cannot afford to go to a shop to have it done. She uses the synthetic hair and I would like to know which of the synthetics you recommend (if any). We will look for the human hair as well and price them. How do you seal off the end of the braid using human hair? any help you can give is appreciated.

  • aliceseymour

Thanks for the tips. I am a beginner at braiding. I braid my daughter's hair because she is unable to go to a salon. We have been using synthetic products and wonder which brand you recommend for that. We will also look for and price human hair for braiding as well. When using human hair, how is the braid suppose to be sealed at the end?

  • aj

    Hello Marquetta,

Do you think you could do a video like this for human hair to use for twist braids. I've been wearing that style for a few years now. When I first started wearing the twist braids my stylist used hair from His and Hers call Zig Zag Curl. They have change the composition of the hair and it is now to silky and the braids will not stay twisted. I'm looking for human hair because the synthetic hair irritates my scalp. Any suggestions?

  • aj

What is the name of the store in El Segundo?

  • Fidelia

I would use the least expensive brand because like you said it is still a good choice and I redo my hair almost every 6 to 8 weeks depending on the growth and the edges more re3gularly.I would offer the various options to clients and let them make the informed decision for themselves. Thanks for the tips Marquetta they are truly helpful and I have found myself becoming more and more confident as a stylist because of you.Fidelia

  • Imani

hi marquetta, this is imani. I'm new to getting my hair braided. I want invisible braids, but I don't know what type of hair to use. I just watched your video, I was thinking about getting remy hair , but I'm glad I watched your video since you said remy hair is not for braiding. I want a nice European type of hair that I can keep using over and over again, and that won't damage my hair that i can find for a reasonable price. Also, I will like to know what size invisble braids should I get- Imani

  • loretta bosch

you did a very good job. I love the remy hair, but just listening to you i totally have been doing it all wrong. I have spending 300 to 400 on remy hair and useing on braiding. I thank you for this video and will go on your website and try the hair and i will get back with you on it i change hair every two to three months.
