Those were the words I heard come out of a young lady’s mouth the other day. It actually stunned me.  Here’s how it all went down…

Ricky, the kids, and I were headed home and wanted to get some wings from Wild Wings Cafe. The young lady taking my to go order had beautiful hair. Her color looked pretty amazing. I asked her where she had gotten it done and she said, ”I did it myself”.

“Really,” I said. “You really did an amazing job, it’s very beautiful!”

She continued to tell me that she went to cosmetology school, took her practical, but hadn’t gotten around to taking her written test yet.

After trying to encourage her to go ahead and take her written test to become a licensed cosmetologist, she finally said… ”I hate doing hair!”

“I’m so sorry to hear that! I couldn’t imagine doing something I hate everyday so I wish you the best,” I said.

As soon as I got in the truck I shared that story with my husband Ricky. I learned something about myself from my conversation with that young lady.

I learned that I am VERY BLESSED to be able to be in a profession that I absolutely love.

The one thing that I think about often popped back in my head. It’s a scene from the movie “Sister Act” where Whoopi Goldberg’s character tells one of the students something like this…

“If you wake up in morning and can think about anything but singing then you’re a singer!”

When I wake up in the morning I think about hair. When I lay down to go to sleep at night, I think about hair. I’ve come up with some of my best work in my dreams!  I’m constantly thinking about perfecting my technique and thinking of ways I can make things easier for you to learn.

My point is if you don’t wake up in the morning excited about what you do, why do something that you absolutely hate?

If you want to sing, go sing! If you want to go sell shoes, go sell shoes! If you want to do hair, go do hair!

I realize it’s not that easy, but make some changes for the New Year, set some goals, and get on the path to get yourself out of the job you hate and start doing something you love doing.

Now, I love doing hair, but I’m making some changes this year that I’m super excited about. What’s the biggest change? I love what I do online. I absolutely love to share my knowledge with you, but for years I’ve really wanted to get back behind the chair. I love interacting with clients, and making people feel and look their absolute best. That’s what we as stylists do. So, at the end of last year I went into full gear getting my salon up and running. You can see the Marquetta Breslin Signature Salon website here.

So, with that being said, I want to kick off the New Year by doing something different.

I get asked about trending hair cuts, color, etc on a regular basis. So here’s what I’m going to do. On January 5th, I’m going to have a live chat.

Just a few weeks ago I caught the tail end of a conversation about a lady that just had her leg amputated because of an infection she got from a nail salon. Shocking right? I’m not too sure of the details of this exact case, but when doing my research I did find some interesting information.

As much as we love those massage chair’s with the foot baths connected, those are the most dangerous! These types of pedicure stations are much harder to clean. Bacteria is prone to live in those types of pedicure stations. It’s much more sanitary to use the plain foot baths that you can clean and wash out in a sink.

Here are some tips to help you protect yourself during your next pedicure:

1. Request new implements prior to your service.
Did you know that each customer is supposed to get a brand new file and buffer for your services? I know, shocking right! As customers we don’t know that, but nail technicians should never use the same file or buffer on more than 1 customer. Always ask for clean instruments and new files. There is so much bacteria that can live on those files!

2. Don’t shave before you pedicure!
I know it sounds weird, but you shouldn’t shave before getting a pedicure. By doing so, you’re prone to have bacteria enter the skin through the little cuts on the skin, so save the shaving until after the pedicure.

It’s very important to be very careful and proactive when you go to a nail salon to get your nails done.

I’ve been asked a few times why I chose Angel so, here’s why. Angel’s Freedom story was selfless. In her second sentence she spoke about how she considered herself a Soldier and Freedom fighter because she fight’s so that others may have spiritual freedom. Wow! How selfless is that? Just in case you didn’t get a chance to read her story I’ve included it in the blog. I think everyone can get something from reading what she had to say.

Angel and I talked over the phone a few times to be sure we made arrangements prior to her arrival. From the moment I spoke to her, I knew there was something special about her. Angel was so down to earth and friendly! I immediately thought to myself, “We’re going to have a good time!”

Angel arrived in Charleston around 8 or 9PM. We’d arranged to meet for dinner once she arrived. Dinner was great. We ate at T-Bones one of my favorite restaurants Downtown Charleston. Dinner was filled with conversation about hair, God, and life. It was great!

The next day we decided to have lunch at “Bubba Gump Shrimp” Downtown Charleston. The food was great and so was the company. We completed the day with a trip to the Movies to see “The Time-Traveler’s Wife”. Great movie!

The evening ended with my son Cale getting sick with a high fever so, I had to head home instead of going to dinner again that afternoon. Angel was great and understanding and we had an outstanding time!

I began my quest at the local beauty supply store. I was surprised to see many, many more brands of Remy hair than there was just a few months before.

I chose a brand that I had heard good things about. Instead of doing my own hair, I went and had my hair sewn in.

A lot of you that follow me on Twitter or Facebook know I’m a fitness fanatic! I work out 6 days a week, so I’m always either wearing braids or some sort of weave.

This also means I have to wash my hair a few times a week with the weave or braids in. This time was no different.

The first few washes and conditions were great! I had no issues at all with the hair, but I was starting to notice after about 2 weeks that the hair was starting become more difficult to manage.

I was on my way back from the gym and had to stop by Walmart. You always run into somebody you know at Walmart, and this time was no different.

I ran into a friend I hadn’t seen in years! She was very well known for her honesty. As soon as she saw me she said in a low voice, “Girl, is that a birds nest or your weave?”

We both cracked up laughing and she said, “That’s not like you. What’s up with your hair?” I explained to her my experiment and she quickly said, “Well I’m declaring this over! Get that fixed now!”

As funny as that story is, it’s true. My hair was a hot mess! Here’s why, real Remy hair should be true virgin unprocessed hair.

The hair that I was wearing may have been called Remy hair, but it certainly was not. The “Remy” hair I was wearing had a silicone coating on it.

Once I washed the hair a few times, that coat wore off and caused severe tangling. I’m also sure that the cuticles were not all aligned. Miss-matched cuticles cause severe matting and tangling.

When choosing a hair style, it’s best to pay special attention to your facial structure. For instance, heart shaped face looks great with hair that ends at chin level. Round faces look best with some height in the bangs. Square faces on the other hand look best with shorter styles tapered toward the face. Triangular shaped faces need more height and fullness at the crown.

To keep your hair style looking fresh, you’ll want to be sure it’s moisturized in between trips to the beauty salon. Also, do your best to keep a strict nightly regimen at night that involves wrapping your hair with a silk cloth before going to bed.

If you choose to be a bit creative with hair coloring, it’s best to use a rinse when dealing with relaxed hair. However, if your hair is natural, pretty much anything goes, but you still want to be careful and not leave the product on too long, which can cause damaging.

Black hair styles can be fun to play with. There are just a few measures you should take before deciding on the perfect hair style for you.

The best part about wearing a weave is that instead of taking 5-6 years to grow long healthy looking hair, hair weaves give you instant length of 12 or more; instantly. Weaves are especially helpful for those who have damaged hair or unmanageable hair. Women who exercise or sweat a lot praise the ease of wearing weaves.

When looking for hair weaves it’s best to know the difference between synthetic fibers and extensions made from human hair.

Synthetic fibers - When you need a quick hair do, without spending a fortune, synthetic hair will do just the trick. Because hair made by synthetic fibers is made to be worn for only a short time, using heating tools is often prohibited and can cause the hair to burn.

Human hair extensions – The most demanded hair used in hair weaving is human hair extensions. Styling hair is much easier when using human hair because they can be heated, with a styling appliances just like real hair can.

There are three main types of weaves: bonded, braided, and fusion.

Bonded weaves – This weaving approach is applied to the head by using a certain type of hair glue. Bonding gives a flat, smooth look, but only lasts for about a week. When taking out bonded hair weaves, it’s best to get a glue remover that’s formulated especially for bonding to get the glue out of your head.

Braided weaves – When braiding the weave in your hair, first your natural hair is braided closely to the scalp. The weave, itself, is then sown to the braids to attach the weave close to the head.

Fusion weaves – Of the three types of weave, the fusion weave stays in the hair the longest. It’s applied to the head by fusing wax to the ends of the natural hair for a natural look.

To keep your weave well – maintained, be sure to get it washed and conditioned regularly by a hair care professional regularly.

Many women also use braids to easily grow out a relaxer or damaged hair. Beauticians know that growing out a relaxer can put strain on the weaker ends, breaking the hair immediately when combing. However, putting in micro braids act to bypass the drama of dealing with your hair while it grows out. You’ll also want to keep the braids in your hair for 6 months to a year, redoing them every 6 -8 weeks. When it’s read to take the braids out, you will need to cut off the dead ends while keeping the healthier natural area.

When hair is badly damaged in an area that’s difficult to cover with a regular hair style, putting in micro braids is the easiest way to replicate your current hair style without further damaging your hair. Now, damaged hair is one thing, but brittle hair should not be put in micro braids as the constant pulling of the hair with heavy extensions will make the hair fall out.

Since micro braids can take up to 12 hours (or more) to do, you can cut that time in half by going to a place where braiding is an every day activity. The fastest hair braiding places are usually done by women from Africa. They can easily do a full head of micro braids in 5-6 hours. Some salons even have 2 -3 people braiding your hair at one time. Let’s face it, you’re getting braids for the sheer look of beauty; you don’t want to spend an entire day of your life at a salon.

While it doesn’t matter if you have long or short hair to wear micro braids, often times shorter hair takes better to braid as longer hair is more prone to breakage then woven into the extra hair. To also help stop breakage when braiding your hair, you’ll want to get regular deep conditionings, hot oil treatment, and clip your ends before getting the braids put in.

Micro braids are especially helpful to get before going on a vacation. Wearing braids while away allows you to spend as much time as possible enjoying your stay instead of worrying about your hair. You can easily go swimming, spend time in the hot sun and even go on nature trails without giving your hair a second thought.

The luxury of having micro braids is that, when cared for properly, they can stay looking fresh and neat for 2-4 months. As with any hair style, it’s important to consult with your hair stylist to go over the look you’re going for and to review the different type of hair to use.

It doesn’t matter if you hair is long or short to wear braids as any length of hair can achieve a clean, sleek look. If you are like most women, you’ve been looking for a way to achieve the ease of having a different look for work, school, or a night on the town. Braids achieve this effortlessly. In no time at all, you look well put together, confident and ready to go.

At almost every hair salon you come across, its likely braiding is on their list of services. However, being prepared before you go to the salon by knowing what kind of braids you want before getting your hair done can save time. When looking for a certain braid style, notice the different forms of hair braiding available. There are styles from French braiding to twists and individual braids and each type of braid has their own unique look.

French braids are forms of hair braiding that can be done on any type hair. The braids are made to look like they are underneath the braid itself. When done right, it can give a woman a neat, tight look.

Depending on the type of braids you get, you want to make sure your braid professional has a reputation for being fast and efficient. One thing you may brace yourself for is that depending upon the type of braids you get you could be sitting in a chair for up to 12 hours (or more) at the salon.
