Keeping Your Braids Clean

To keep them fresh and clean, your braids should be washed at least every 2-3 weeks. Choosing not to wash them for extended periods of time can result in bacterial buildup and an unpleasant odor.

One method of cleansing braids consists of soaking your hair with water. This process is fairly easy: plait several of your braids together, dilute regular shampoo with water and put it in a spray bottle. Apply the shampoo to your scalp and use the tips of your fingers to massage and gently work the shampoo through your hair.

Rinse your hair thoroughly and towel-dry. It's important to allow your braids to dry completely before going to bed in order to prevent bacteria buildup and mildew.

If your hair becomes frizzy after washing, apply small amounts of gel or aloe vera while it's still damp and secure it with a silk scarf. Between washings, you can use an antiseptic product to cleanse and freshen the scalp.
