One of the most beautiful qualities of a child is his or her hair. Soft, delicate, and natural, a little one's curly, wavy, or straight locks create an impression of innocence and youth that can last for years when properly cared for.
However, it's important to understand that children's hair has special needs and must be given extra attention to keep it healthy and attractive. Parents can't expect that their kids' hair will continue to look great without their supervision or assistance.
Typical problems that can arise include the fact that a child may cut his or her own hair. Kids love to experiment - sometimes using scissors. Another problem is that kids may try to color their hair. Using food color or other types of dyes, they sometimes attempt to change the shade of their hair without consulting an adult. Be sure to keep these potentially tempting "hair care" items hidden safely away in cupboards.
Your children's hair should be combed or brushed each day. Parents can teach their kids how to do this properly when they become preschool-age. A short haircut or a neat arrangement of waves will help hair to stay in place more easily, especially for children with natural black hair. As your kids get older, they can venture into more elaborate and stylish forms of hair braiding and styling.
Use gentle shampoos and conditioners on children's hair, perhaps the tear-free kinds that are specially formulated for kids. Avoid using too many hair products, such as styling mousse, detangling lotion, and hair spray. Over time, these can dry out hair and cause the ends to break off. As long as they are not used too frequently, however, these types of products can help you manage your child's hair more easily.
It's also a smart idea to avoid extremes with a child's hair. Outlandish hairdos, flashy colors, and expensive styles are difficult to maintain month after month. Guide your child's or teen’s choice of style. Beyond a basic cut and arrangement, let him pay for anything more from personal income - rather than depend on you for excessive styling costs.
Check your children's hair periodically for lice or other signs of irritation or infection, including dandruff. If you find suspicious spots that look like mites, ask the pharmacist or doctor which products you can buy to take care of the problem. Be sure to wash all bedding and worn clothing in hot water to get rid of eggs, lice, or germs.
Your child's hair is special. Train her how to care for it, and those beautiful waves will continue to enhance her appearance for years to come.
