Children's hair requires special care to help it stay clean and healthy. Since kids are usually interested in other things besides daily hair grooming, parents often must supervise the combing, brushing, washing, and styling of their little one's locks.
Proper Nutrition
Human hair reflects a person's general health. Dull, dry hair could point to the need for drinking more fluids, as the child may be dehydrated. Excessively dry hair can even reveal a health condition like thyroid disease, although it is more likely an adult will have this condition. Proper nutrition and hydration can bring out the shine and bounce of a child's hair. If your child does not follow a healthy eating plan, check with your doctor about buying children's vitamin supplements.
Shampooing and Conditioning
It is important to wash your young one's hair every day or two. Depending on your son's or daughter's age, you can get tangle-free, tear-free shampoo and conditioner, which some companies combine as one product rather than two. This makes hair-washing much easier on both parent and child. Use an amount that is about the size of a dime. Mix with plenty of water to work up a lather, and gently rub around the scalp line and then through each scalp section. You may wish to lather up again, depending on how dirty the hair is. Use warm - but not hot - water to rinse the shampoo away. Condition if needed by using a dime-sized amount and rinsing completely.
Drying and Styling Hair
Teach your little one how to part and comb their hair while it is still damp, following a firm but gentle towel drying. Avoid the use of electric hair dryers unless your child's hair is very thick or long, as some children may be too young to understand the correct use of these tools. In certain cases, they may forget to avoid spilled water on the floor and get shocked while holding the plugged-in hair dryer. When a child is old enough, show her how to hold the dryer with one hand and style with the other, taking care that the dryer is held the proper distance from the head to avoid over-drying the hair or causing skin burns.
Show your child how to arrange his or her hair each day in a style that is natural, becoming, and functional. This might take the form of hair braids, curls, waves, or a ponytail, depending on his or her preferences.
Hair is an important part of each person's appearance. Start demonstrating proper hair grooming and management when your kids are still toddlers. These good habits will last a lifetime!
