Treating Excessive Hair Loss
Sudden hair loss can be emotionally upsetting and cause great anxiety. Women may find it even harder to bear than men. While the problem of hair loss is not common in women, they may suffer from this problem due to hormonal changes. Menopausal women are more prone to losing hair at an unnatural rate than others.
However, hair loss can even occur among women who are in mid-twenties and thirties. If you find yourself losing an excessive amount of hair, the first thing you should do is to visit a dermatologist to undergo scalp check-up.
Hair loss may be caused by a hormonal imbalance. Thyroid, testosterone, and progesterone levels in the body may be lower or higher than they should be. Female hair loss may also result from poor nutrition, anemia and serious illness. In some some mothers, the problem of hair loss is noticed a few months after they give birth. Medicines like blood thinners, blood pressure pills, antidepressants, and chemotherapy treatments can also contribute to hair loss.
It's quite possible you're familiar with the term "common baldness". This is a typical condition related to male-pattern baldness. Common baldness generally occurs due to a hereditary trait. The hairline recedes with baldness occurring on the top of the head. Female-pattern baldness is characterized by thinning of hair over the whole scalp.
Before devising a treatment for your hair loss, it is important to understand the underlying cause behind it. If the problem is linked to a hormonal imbalance or medicinal effect, it can usually be corrected.
You can slow down development of baldness by applying a substance called minoxidil (brand name: Rogaine) on your scalp. While minoxidil is available even without prescription, you can get finasteride (brand name: Propecia) by prescription.
If it turns out you cannot find an effective treatment for your hair loss, you might wish to consider hairpieces like wigs and hair weaves. Modern hairpieces are often made from human hair, and can restore a natural, attractive appearance.
