How To Stop Hair Loss

The loss of hair can signify a serious underlying problem. Instead of avoiding the issue due to embarrassment, it's important to recognize the causes behind your hair loss. After all, knowing the cause is the first step towards a solution.

Hair follicles grow out hair in phases, normally at 1/2 inch each month. Therefore, most of your hair keeps growing in phases between two to six years. At that time, the remainder of your hair is in a resting period, which later sheds to allow new hairs to grow in its place. Normally, a person loses around 100 hairs each day.

A few more reasons for hair loss are:

- Childbirth
- Thyroid diseases
- Excessive breakage (due to different styling treatments like bleaches, dyes, straighteners, and tints)
- High fever, serious illness, or fungus infections on scalp
- Autoimmune disorders (your own immune system harming your hair follicles causing bald patches)
- Major surgeries
- Medications for arthritis, depression, blood pressure, heart diseases
- Chemotherapy for treatment of cancer
- Oral contraceptives
- Deficiency of proteins and iron

The problem of hair loss can often be successfully treated with the help of a reputable doctor. Some common avenues for treatment are:

- Long-term application of minoxidil twice each day on your scalp, which yields results over a long period. However, the use of minoxidil must be continued indefinitely, as problems might recur if you discontinue treatment.

- Hair transplant surgeries involve planting hair follicles in bald areas, and carry little risk of infection. They may offer a permanent solution to the problem of hair loss.

- Hair loss due to pregnancy typically resolves itself a few months after childbirth. Weaving, wefting, extending your existing hair, hairpieces, hair prostheses, and toupees are some of the many non-surgical methods for restoring lost hair.

- Different conditions like malnutrition, stress and certain medications can often lead to hair loss. It's important to supplement your diet with the proper nutrients and get adequate rest to prevent further loss of hair.
