While you may think baldness is a problem which only plagues men, this is a misconception. Surprisingly, half of women aged 40 and older experience excessive hair loss. Women over 65 years are at an even greater risk of losing their hair at an alarming rate. Hair loss is not a gender-specific problem; however, its cause may differ in males and females.
Even though hair loss is a common problem, its underlying causes may vary. Androgenetic alopecia has been identified as the most common type of hair loss. This is also called "pattern-baldness". This is a hereditary problem which can affect both men and women.
Washing your hair regularly does not aggravate the problem of hair loss. However, if you tease or brush your hair vigorously, you are running the risk of losing it at a faster pace. For a fuller look, a layered styling of hair is the best choice. You should avoid hair weaves, but you can safely choose to perm or color your hair.
Apart from androgenetic alopecia, individuals may experience temporary hair loss for other reasons. Pregnancy is one such cause. The hormonal imbalance during pregnancy may adversely affect your hair. Another factor that may worsens the problem of hair loss among women is the use of birth control pills.
For the sake of healthy, lustrous hair, you should always monitor any kind of hair loss. If you find that you are losing hair at a rapid rate, seek treatment immediately to remedy the problem.
