Should You Get A Perm?

Getting a permanent wave should not be a hasty decision. The results will last for months, and you may not like the way it looks. Sure, you can straighten your hair afterwards, but the added chemicals may damage your hair and keep it from looking its best.

Permanents, or "perms", come in many styles. A loose wave can help to relax tight curls and make your hair more manageable. A curly perm adds texture and coil to long, straight tresses. There are other styles that come and go as well. Prices vary from as low as $35 to more than $100, depending on where you get the permanent and the type of wave you choose.

The actual permanent solution can be hard on your scalp, so be sure the skin on your head is in good condition. This means it should be free of any irritations or sores. Extra-dry skin or hair should be treated a week or two before getting your perm. You also need to delay straightening or coloring processes, since getting two or more procedures close together could wreak havoc with your hair and cause breakage or damage.

Be sure your stylist knows the type of perm you want and the type of style you plan to wear afterwards. Keep in mind that some people do not like their perms at first, due to an excessively tight curl or the "frizz factor". However, in a few days these problems should disappear, and you will fall in love with your new look.

It's important to follow your stylist's perm care guidelines, from when to wash a new perm to caring for your new waves or curls. Avoid pulling or yanking on your new permanent wave, as this may cause the delicate shaft to split or break.

When created and cared for properly, a permanent can give you a brand-new, beautiful look. So schedule a consultation with your stylist - and find out what this process can do to enhance your natural hair!
